The video player on Hudl is powered by Silverlight. System requirements for Silverlight are Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8, and Mac OS 10.4.8 or later.

Silverlight is not compatible on mobile devices. If you’re on a mobile device and want to watch film, download the free Hudl app.

Install Silverlight

  1. Log in to your Hudl account and go to your team’s Library page. There you will see a prompt to download Silverlight if necessary.
    • If you see a video player with the Hudl logo in the middle, you do not need to install Silverlight.
    • If you see a dialogue that says Oh Snap!, you will need to install Silverlight.
    • If you’re missing features (i.e. stars to tag highlights or the drawing and telestration tools)
  2. Click Get Microsoft Silverlight in the prompt.
  3. Once you verify that your computer meets both Silverlight’s and Hudl’s requirements, click Installation Instructions, found on the left.
  4. After reading the instructions, click Windows or Macintosh, based on your computer type, under Direct Download Links.
  5. Your browser will prompt you to either run or save the file (Silverlight.exe). Click Run to start the download. When the download is finished, you will get another prompt for the installer. Click Run to start the installation.
  6. Click Install Now after reading the license agreement and privacy statement.
  7. Once installation is complete, refresh your browser on the Hudl library page to watch video. For some computers, you may need to completely close and reopen the browser for Silverlight to work correctly.

Troubleshooting Video Playback Issues

If you have issues watching video on, it may be because Silverlight is corrupt or not updated.

  • White screen where the video is supposed to appear.
  • An error message like “We’re sorry, Hudl needs to refresh your browser.”

Follow these steps if you see these errors:

On a PC

  1. Close out of all Internet browsers
  2. Open your computer’s Start Menu
  3. Click Control Panel
  4. Select Add or Remove Programs
  5. Select Microsoft Silverlight and then click Uninstall

On a Mac

  1. Close out of all Internet browsers
  2. Double-click the hard drive icon on your desktop
  3. Navigate to your Internet plug-ins (/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/)
  4. Drag Silverlight.plugin to the trash bin
  5. If it’s there, drag WPFe.plugin to the trash bin
  6. Empty your trash bin

Now Reinstall Silverlight

  1. Go to
