Common Questions

How do I tag player stats? What happens if I miss a few plays during tagging? How do I match the data with my video?

Tag a Game

  1. Log in to the Hudl app on any iPhone.
  2. Tap the menu icon in the top left and select Tag a Game. Alt text
  3. Select the game or choose The game isn’t listed… to add it to the schedule. Alt text
  4. Choose whether you are Playing Them or Scouting Them.
  5. Tap Yes or No to choose whether or not to collect your team’s player stats. Collect Player Stats
  6. Tell the app What Happened? by selecting one of the four kicking options:
    • Kickoff: Spot the ball twice. First, touch the point on the field where the kick was received, then where the return ended the play.
    • Received
    • Onside Kick
    • Receiving Onside Kick
  7. Tag the first possession. Select:
    • Run: Fumble, Penalty, QB Sacked and Touchdown.
    • Pass: Complete, Incomplete, Interception and QB Sacked.
    • Penalty: If a penalty occurs, identify the resulting down after the penalty and spot the ball on the resulting yard line.
    • Something Else: The options under something else are QB Scramble, FG Attempt, and Punt. Alt text
  8. On 4th Down, Hudl assumes the most common option is a punt. If the 4th down play is not a punt, select Something else… to choose FG attempt, Run, Pass, QB Scramble, or Penalty.
  9. At the end of the game, select End of Regulation and choose either End of Game or Overtime.

The tagged data will automatically import via 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi, ready to match with the game footage..

Detailed Explanations

  • Fumble: If there was a fumble on the run, select which team recovered the ball and spot the ball on the yard line where it was recovered.
  • Touchdown: If a touchdown is scored, enter the result of the extra point. If the team attempts a 2-point conversion, tap Something else… and enter the result of the conversion.
  • Complete: If the pass is complete, spot the ball where the play ends.
  • Incomplete: If the pass is incomplete, it will automatically go to the next page to tag the next down.
  • Interception: If an interception occurs, spot the ball where the play ended. The possession will automatically change.
  • QB Sacked: If the quarterback is sacked, spot the ball where he went down.

Catch Up

If you get behind in the game, don’t worry - the app makes it easy for you to make any changes on Hudl.com after the game.

  1. Tap Catch Up if a play or segment of the game is missed.
  2. Identify who has possession of the ball, the current quarter, down, and distance, and continue tagging from there. Alt text

  3. Once the data and video are matched, manually enter the tags that were missed online.

Helpful Tips:

  • Mark the hash by tapping on the left, right or middle hash when spotting the ball.
  • Rotate the device from portrait view to landscape view when spotting the ball so that the screen mirrors the view of the field. Alt text

Box Score

Share the box score with others via email.

  1. Tap Share. This option will only be available at halftime and the end of the game. Alt text
  2. A new email is automatically created to share the Box Score with yourself, media, or another coach on the team by entering their email address.
    • Click here to see what information is included in the box score.

The link to the Box Score is a public link and can be viewed by anyone that receives the email.

Match Tagged Data to Video

Match the data with the corresponding video clips once the data and video are both uploaded. If you have trouble uploading the data from Tag a Game, follow these steps. After the game, the tagged data will appear as a playlist with a tag symbol in the Video Library.

  1. Log in to Hudl.com from any computer, then hover over Video and select Library.
  2. Check the box next to Live Tag Data and the box next to the playlist with the video so that both are highlighted in blue.
    • If there are multiple angles of film, select all video angles and the data.
    • Basic and Elite packages can only match data with one angle of video.
  3. Click Match. Alt text
  4. Use the up and down arrows to move the data to match it with the corresponding video clip. Alt text
  5. Use the online editing tools if a video clip needs split, deleted or merged with another clip.
  6. Once everything is matched up, click Save. In the Library, the ‘Live Tag Data’ playlist will no longer be there as it is now attached to the video playlist.
