Top 5 High School Football Fanbases

High school football is what the American sports culture is all about. There’s something special about a crisp Friday night in the fall. As communities across the country come together to cheer on their teams, Hudl is hard at work making sure everything is ready to go for coaches and athletes to start breaking down film after the game. We love being a part of it. The passion around high school football is felt every week in our offices. It drives us to be better at our jobs, because after all, we’re fans too.

Hudl is a collection of software developers, designers and of course, sports fans from all over the country. Some of us like to boast about our high school football days, and it inevitably leads to the debate of who was better.

We can’t answer that question, but it got us thinking. We gather a lot of information at Hudl, tracking who views our site and from where. Maybe we can use that data to determine the most passionate high school football fans across the country.

To generate the list, we put together a formula based on how many fans visit our athlete and team pages, taking population, number of area high schools and several different engagement metrics into account. It certainly won’t put the debate to rest, but we hope it sparks more conversation about the game we love.

5. North Carolina

With two metro areas in our top 25 traffic sources, North Carolina breaks into the rankings. The Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham areas are fanatical about high school football, and they have plenty to cheer about. Check out some of the elite talent playing in North Carolina right now:

4. California

No surprise here. California is home to some of the nation’s most elite programs. The Golden State boasts three nationally ranked programs - No. 5 St. John Bosco, No. 7 Junipero Serra, and No. 8 De La Salle. The highest populated state in the country ranks No. 2 on our list of most-visited states in Hudl. Here are some of the most-viewed athletes in California:

3. Georgia

Georgia doesn’t have the population numbers of the other top five states, but folks down there sure do like their football. Actually, it seems to be a way of life. Atlanta checks in as the top metro area for fans on Hudl. It could be due to UGA and Georgia Tech fans checking in on their recruiting classes. Make sure you take a look at these highly rated programs’ pages to see what Georgia football is all about:

2. Florida

Everyone knows about Florida high school football. The competition level is high across the entire state, and it’s evident in the amount of fans checking Hudl highlights every week. Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa, Boca Raton and Tallahassee have some of the most passionate fans based on Hudl metrics. One thing is for sure: whether you’re a Gator, Seminole or Hurricane, odds are you’re keeping tabs on the in-state talent.

1. Texas

The state that coined the phrase “Friday Night Lights” owns the No. 1 spot on our list. Fans in the Lone Star state swarm to watch highlights of their favorite teams and players on Hudl. Houston leads the way for all Texas cities, while Dallas, Fort Worth and San Antonio aren’t far behind. (It’s why we created a site dedicated to DFW teams and their standout athletes! Feel free to browse around for your favorite Texas team or player.) Here we thought it would be fun to showcase a few guys already making a name for themselves on the FBS level:
