Kyle's Bo Jackson

Kyle D

You may recognize Project Manager Kyle Deterding from his world famous promotional videos, you may not. You should however, get to know him, considering he was one of the driving forces behind our new mobile pages.

Aside from making awesome things like Top Play, Kyle spends his workday strolling through the Hudl office, making sure everyone sees his bright and shining face at some point. He’s just super popular. Let’s find out how that happened:

“I was born and raised in Wichita, Kan. My dad is a high school principal so most of my childhood memories revolve around Friday night lights or state basketball. I have one sister. I got the brains, she got the athleticism and the brains. Still not sure how I feel about that.

“With no future as an athlete, I came to Nebraska and started interning at Hudl in 2007 in an effort to stay close to sports. I graduated in 2009 and worked as a software developer for three years before starting my current role as a project manager. In my free time I do a lot of napping, brewing beer, and nursing injuries from co-ed softball.”

What are you most looking forward to in 2013?
Hard to say. My roommates are moving out; I probably won’t miss them at all. I’m hoping they invite me over for free dinners often. Oh, and this is the year the Royals will finish above .500!

What’s your favorite part of your job?
There’s so much. I don’t know if there’s a company that embraces “Work Hard, Play Hard” more. For every trip to Vegas or fun video you guys see, there’s someone helping a coach at 3 a.m. or giving up their weekend to spread the word about Hudl. I love working at a company that pushes me to get better every single day.

What’s your preferred social media?
Is Snapchat social media? Otherwise, gotta be Twitter. I’m not very consistent at tweeting, but I love hearing from athletes and coaches. (@deterding)

Favorite athlete, dead or alive, collegian or professional:
This is a tough one. It’s a toss up between Johnny Damon and Bo Jackson. I’ve always been a Royals fan. I grew up watching Johnny Damon in the minors, and his ALCS Game 7 to destroy the Yankees might be the best game of all time. Bo is just Bo. He’ll always be in the conversation for greatest athlete of all time. Growing up, my family’s dog was named “Kyle’s Bo Jackson”.

What inspired Fork on the Go? Any other innovative products in the works?
I’m an entrepreneur at heart, really. Some big names passed on the partnership opportunity, but I did get some free popcorn. It’s a start I guess. I’m always coming up with solutions to very real problems. Most of my ideas involve cutlery, though.

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?
I don’t know. I get bored figuring it out.
