We all know that computers, like most things in life, don’t last forever. We have seen some great looking computers, but we’ve also seen some that could use a few updates! Keep in mind not all computers are created equal, and you should make sure your computer can run Hudl the way it is meant to be run!
Coaches ask us all the time for computer recommendations. We realize that not everyone is in the market for a new computer or a top-of-the-line computer, so we’ve included a few recommendations to ensure you have a great Hudl experience, based on your current computer needs.
To make sure your computer is set for this season, right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop and select Properties from the resulting menu. The Windows system information screen will appear. The screen will list your computer’s specs so you can compare them with our requirements and recommendations.
Note: Keep in mind you’ll be able watch video on Hudl.com on any computer with an internet connection, but it’s important to have a good machine for the Hudl Video Editor. Having the right computer for the Video Editor will make the difference in your publishing time. The speed of your processor, the amount of RAM, and your internet connection are all going to be factors that play into the publishing process.
Wonder if your computer makes the cut?
These are the minimum requirements for using the Hudl Video Editor. If your computer meets these specs, you will be able to use the Hudl Video Editor, but your publish time may still be doubled.
- Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 3, Vista, or 7
- RAM: 2GB
- Hard drive space: At least 50GB at 5400rpm for capture
Buying a new computer?
If you are buying a new computer, the following are the minimum specs we recommend for a great Hudl experience.
- Processor: Intel core 2 duo
- Operating System: Windows 7
- RAM: 3GB
- Hard drive space: At least 150GB at 5400rpm for capture
Looking for a powerful machine?
Some teams want a recommendation for a top-of-the-line computer. Using the below specs, we’ve seen some teams get publishing time for two angles of video down to around 30 minutes.
- Processor: Intel quad core or i7
- Operating System: Windows 7
- RAM: At least 4GB
- Hard drive space: At least 150GB at 7200rpm for capture
There may be other requirements depending on your method of capture. If you wish to capture from a MiniDV camera, you will need a firewire port or an expansion slot for a firewire card (or both if you want to capture two angles simultaneously).
Curious about the speed of your internet?

The download speed will impact how fast you can watch film on Hudl.com, but the upload speed is what impacts publishing. Upload speeds of greater than 2 mbps are generally pretty good. Less than 2 mbps might slow down publishing on your machine.
